Korry’s design expertise, advanced R&D facilities, and production experience also enable us to design and product NVIS-compatible displays for overseas manufacturers and governments. Our custom software allows us to analyze and adjust filter characteristics to meet almost any NVIS requirements. Foreign governments and aircraft and avionics manufacturers are familiar with MIL-L-85762A. Many are developing NVIS with different response curves than MIL-L-85762A’s Class A or Class B, and often borrow its system of NVIS classification, expanding it with Class C, D, etc.
International manufacturers often assign different priorities to color, luminance, contrast, and NVIS radiance (NR). For example, they may accept higher NR values in exchange for increased luminance and improved sunlight readability.
NVG gain
The British use a convention of quantifying NVIS compatibility for radiance with “NVG gain,” which is the ratio of red and infrared to green energy in the display. This has been defined in a provisional specification (Working Paper 6, 1986) by the Royal Aerospace Establishment. This paper describes and I3(l) response curve for helicopters, and an I3W(l) curve for fast jets. The I3W(l) curve specifies a response window in the green region for viewing head-up display projections. A new British Defense Standard 00970 is in progress, which will formally document the I3(l), I3W(l), and MIL-L-85762A specifications to allow crewstation designers a choice of conventions.
